The Shadow Fold is a swath of blackness patrolled by brutal flying volcras - Alina and her best friend Mal are sent on a mission to cross it with an army convoy. When they are attacked, in trying to protect Mal, Alina unleashes a power she had no idea she possessed. From that moment on, her life is changed - she is summoned to begin training as a Grisha under the tutelage of the Darkling himself. Starring the inimitable Dodger, presumably of Oliver Twist fame, this historical action/adventure/mystery/romance is set in Victorian London, and has everything to recommend it as an entertaining, informative, and exciting read. Dodger is a tosher - someone who makes a living roaming the sewers of London looking for money, jewelry, and anything else of value. He pops out of a manhole one stormy night just in time to rescue a young woman who is being brutally beaten by a pair of thugs. His acquaintance with the badly injured and mysterious Simplicity leads him on a great adventure during which he meets the likes of Charlie Dickens, Ben Disraeli, and Sweeney Todd, among other celebrities of the day. Sir Terry Pratchett works his distinctive literary magic to create a tale that keeps the reader on the edge of his or her seat, picking up a bit of interesting British history along the way.

In between torture sessions carried out by the complicated team of Captain von Linden and his assistant Anna Engel, Queenie is made to write every day, to divulge enough secrets each time to be allowed to live for another day. Interwoven with her spy narrative is the story of meeting her best friend Maddie, the pilot who delivered her to France. Amazing historical detail, multiple points of view, and intricate plot twists make this an excellent read for winter break!
There's Rebecca, who has come to a small, seaside village to spend the summer, and there's Ferelith, who offers to show Rebecca the secrets of the town...but at a price. Finally, there's a priest whose descent into darkness illuminates the girls' frightening story. White Crow is as beautifully written as it is horrifically gripping.Hudson Library Teenshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15050336843037300496noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2868556975086654740.post-87869586393551784392011-07-02T13:56:00.002-04:002011-07-02T13:58:53.739-04:00Summer Book-a-Day Run-Down<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 227px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUn57l_Z168bVpch_kRkHLS1yKdWYmzy6zTEHsXG6b-jfSrCxzEGCqQGplYkgZ4EDrpwtv5_wpF3TR5jjUgbtcA3sWagMRAZ5O9azo_XeqodLOHdeH0SYJ-OS6DufnFzlZnp9KyQVUg29Y/s320/everything.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5624815979587188562" />

Everything I Was by Corrine Demas

Thirteen-year-old Irene's world is turned upside down when her father loses his job as an investment banker because of a merger. Her penthouse lifestyle in New York City's Upper West Side is over. Despite her socialite mother's protests and denial about their financial situation, the family put their belongings in storage and move upstate into Irene's grandfather's farmhouse. At first Irene is skeptical and resentful, but she quickly warms up to helping her grandfather in the greenhouse, exploring the cozy barn and making new friendships with a charming family with five kids who live down the road. But Irene's mother is still determined to return to the city, and the question remains: if and when the time comes, will Irene want to go back to her former life? Having written for picture book, middle-grade, and adult audiences, Demas's first book for teens presents an authentic if occasionally precious and melodramatic portrait of country life, economic stress, and the tensions associated with a major life change. Irene's budding independence and inner strength add greatly to this absorbing coming-of-age tale. Or Fate. But there's something weird about the dusty unicorn tapestry she discovers in a box of old books. She finds the creature woven within it compelling and frightening. After the tapestry comes into her possession, Tessa experiences dreams of the past and scenes from a brutal hunt that she herself participated in. When she accidentally pulls a thread from the tapestry, Tessa releases a terrible centuries old secret. She also meets William de Chaucy, an irresistible 16th-century nobleman. His fate is as inextricably tied to the tapestry as Tessa's own. Together, they must correct the wrongs of the past. But then the Fates step in, making a tangled mess of Tessa's life. Now everyone she loves will be destroyed unless Tessa does their bidding and defeats a cruel and crafty ancient enemy.Hudson Library Teenshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15050336843037300496noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2868556975086654740.post-61557427439420782272011-06-27T19:21:00.003-04:002011-06-27T19:51:01.099-04:00Summer Book-a-Day Run-Down<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 213px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgN2NaG76Y8iLr8DeZQIKmlSDjwMoRs7Ky-zWLrQJZlLW0kvk24f_zC8MohwUmEBLzx73Yki4wVOTGteUflxBl9EmUYKq8KROgjtN1-tMcT0KGvxz_Z7R9_TzxDyilXtj6Ywp_nRjWNB2zw/s320/drought-by-pam-bachorz.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5623051113733319378" />
DROUGHT by Pam Bachorz

Ruby dreams of escaping the Congregation. Escape from slaver Darwin West and his cruel Overseers. Escape from the backbreaking work of gathering Water. Escape from living as if it is still 1812, the year they were all enslaved.

When Ruby meets Ford—an irresistible, kind, forbidden new Overseer—she longs to run away with him to the modern world where she could live a normal teenage life. Escape with Ford would be so simple.

But if Ruby leaves, her community is condemned to certain death. She, alone, possesses the secret ingredient that makes the Water so special—her blood—and it’s the one thing that the Congregation cannot live without.

Drought is the haunting story of one community’s thirst for life, and the dangerous struggle of the only girl who can grant it.Hudson Library Teenshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15050336843037300496noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2868556975086654740.post-2551093049868189352011-05-18T15:14:00.005-04:002011-05-18T15:25:21.988-04:00The Teen Summer Newsletter is HERE!Check out the exciting programs we are hosting this summer!
